Are 504s often written in a way so that I can't discuss alternate assessments with the student, especially when his comfort level determines what he will (or "won't") do? I'm afraid that the conversation will end there, however, because she's already said, before asking the kid, that he "won't" email me or write down questions. I'm planning on bringing in a scale-type rubric that shows steps leading up to full function (speaking in the classroom) beginning with minimal non-verbal communication (sending an email, writing a note or a question for me to respond in writing later, etc). (Note: not a "selective mute." He interacts socially.) I'm getting no help from the guidance dept. We've got another meeting coming up after she shot down my suggestions for ways that we give Johnny a grade without requiring him to speak to anyone. In THIS student's 504 (here named Johnny), however, part of it says that I'm not allowed to discuss anything with the student. Many of my students have 504 plans that force me to make alternative assignments whenever speaking in class is part of the assessment. I've got a student, not medicated, who received a 504 this year because his mom didn't want him to feel anxious about oral presentations.
